IMPACT ON HEALTH

Inadequate access to food is a serious population health problem in Canada, linked to poorer mental health, higher rates of infectious and non-communicable disease and injuries, increased health care utilization and premature mortality. Around 8.7 million people, including 2.1 million children, struggle to afford the food they need. This has a more profound effect on children as it will distress their growth and cause weakened immune systems. In 2022, around 80,000 people lost their lives due to nutrition deficiencies in Canada.

Nearly half of adults living in severely food-insecure households reported delaying, reducing, or skipping prescription medications because they couldn’t afford them. There is a particularly strong relationship between food insecurity and poor mental health. The risk of experiencing depression, anxiety disorders, mood disorders, or suicidal thoughts increases with the severity of food insecurity for adults and youth. Essentially, when an individual is experiencing severe food insecurity, it deteriorates their mental and physical health.

With a fork or spoon being too removed, food insecurity stretches far beyond an empty pantry to the litany of health issues that unfold in homes and communities. In children, this has an even greater consequence as it stunts growth and weakens the immune system where later in life may result in chronic health issues. It says that, in 2022 alone, malnutrition is predicted to have killed another 80,000 people, serving as a sobering reminder of the seriousness at play here.

IMPORTANCE OF DONATING

Often the people in society who are in need are the most overlooked. Society and governments aren’t set up to protect everyone who needs it. That’s why you can make a difference by buying one of our stickers which will make a difference for many individuals who are in need of food. However, if you wish to simply donate, you may find a local food bank and donate there.

The challenge of addressing food insecurity is complex and often overlooked. Due to disparities in support systems and financial barriers, many individuals and families struggle to obtain the resources they need. This is where your involvement can really make a difference. Our sticker program is more than just a fundraiser, it’s a way to actively help and uplift those in need. Every sticker you buy helps provide vital food and support for individuals and families facing hunger. It’s a simple but effective way to be part of a bigger solution.
